Energy Management

Welcome to Buncombe County Schools' Energy Management department!

Did you know that Buncombe County Schools' average energy use intensity (EUI) is 28% lower than the median EUI for U.S. K-12 schools? Did you also know that by the end of 2022 Buncombe County Schools will have 2.4 MW of solar PV installed, supplying clean energy directly to it's facilities?
Buncombe County Schools not only recognizes that energy conservation, efficiency, and on-site production of renewable energy help save money and controls energy costs, but creates resiliency, and provides healthier, more effective learning environments. On top of all of these benefits, saving energy and harnessing renewable energy is also good for the environment.

In a typical school, heating and cooling systems (HVAC) can account for nearly 60% of the energy consumed, while lighting accounts for roughly 30% of energy consumed. The potential for saving energy by changing habits, optimizing HVAC efficiency, installing high-efficiency equipment, retrofitting or replacing lighting, and producing on-site renewable energy is immense. Our goal is to work in conjunction with schools and across departments to maximize energy and cost savings.

Continuing the decades of progress we have made in energy conservation and cost savings, Buncombe County Schools is excited to further expand its Energy Management program. It is our hope that our work will not only reduce energy consumption and utility costs, but also have a positive impact on the environment for years to come.
