Energy Management

Welcome to Buncombe County Schools' Energy Management department!

Did you know that all of the schools in Buncombe County consume less energy per square foot than the average K-12 school (48.5 kBtu/square foot) in the United States? What an accomplishment!
School districts all over the country have found that energy conservation and efficiency can help save money; provide healthier, more effective learning environments, and reduce maintenance costs. On top of all of these benefits, saving energy is also good for the environment. Everyone can play a role in energy conservation--even by turning off the lights in your classroom when you leave.

In a typical school, heating and cooling systems (HVAC) can account for nearly 60% of the energy consumed, while lighting accounts for roughly 30% of energy consumed. The potential for energy conservation by changing habits, optimizing HVAC efficiency, installing high-efficiency equipment, and retrofitting or replacing lighting is immense. Our goal is to work in conjunction with schools and across departments to maximize energy and cost savings.

Continuing the decades of progress we have made in energy conservation and cost savings, Buncombe County Schools is excited to further expand its Energy Management program. It is our hope that our work will not only reduce energy consumption and utility costs, but also have a positive impact on the environment.
