Summer Meals
Summer MealsStudents may not be in school during the summer months, but they still need healthy and consistent meals! For a variety of reasons, the reality is that many WNC kids are not always getting the meals they require outside of their school's care and a hungry child cannot thrive. This is why volunteers with the Buncombe County Schools summer meals service are helping to meet this need by bringing meals to the area children who need them.

As of 2016, the program is currently in its fourth year, having started in the summer of 2012, and is made possible through a partnership between Buncombe County Schools, the USDA and No Kid Hungry. Last summer, the program distributed approximately 76,000 meals and with this year's longer summer break and increased demand, BCS nutrition specialists are expecting to distribute substantially more meals to kids in need.

School Nutrition Supervisor Sheryl Harris says, "Our belief is that no child should be hungry in our community.  The purpose of the summer feeding program is to fill the gap in between school sessions where all children can thrive and succeed.  Hunger should not be the obstacle that inhibits their growth as individuals in anyway during their formative years."
