Ms. Karen Gailey’s seventh grade math students at A.C. Reynolds Middle School are showing that strong teaching plus the right tools plus community-minded kids equals classroom success.

Last month, Imagine Math recognized one of her classes as a Math Classroom of the Month for their generous participation in the company’s charity drive. They had a choice between using that program’s “THINK points” to help themselves or to help others. They chose to help the community, and as a reward, Imagine Math gave the students a $50 gift card for a pizza party.

“That shows me that they really care about the people in this community,” Ms. Gailey said. “That shows me their character.”

Ms. Gailey uses the Imagine Math digital curriculum tool to help individualize learning for her students. Each student earns THINK points as they complete online math lessons and challenges tailored to their specific growth needs. They’re allowed to use those points to either customize an avatar for the online learning platform or to convert the points to cash for a donation to Feeding the Carolinas charity as part of Imagine Math’s Do Math! Pay It Forward contest. Her students completed their assignments and donated all their THINK points to the charity, which led to the December pizza party.

“The points were so high that they got put into a drawing and got picked for this recognition of their generosity,” Ms. Gailey said. “And they deserve it! It’s so nice to see a group of kids who are honest, open, and kind.”

Students Zoey Rathbone and Trey Clark said they cared much more about helping their neighbors than customizing an online character.

“We like to give back, because we know how lucky we are to have nice things,” Zoey said.

Trey also said he is thankful to have Imagine Math as a tool in the classroom.

“I’ve grown so much since we started using it,” he said. “I do better in all my classes. It’s just really easy to use.”

Imagine Math also selected ACRMS teacher Celeste Gay’s Advanced Math 6 class as a Math Classroom of the Month, and Imagine Español named Ms. Ruth Izquierdo Alfonso’s second grade Dual Language Spanish Immersion class at West Buncombe Elementary School to its 2021 Imagine Español Hall of Fame. BCS will feature both of these teachers soon.
