Dr. Tony Baldwin, Superintendent of Schools, has named Geneva “Ginny” Barrett Director of Title I/Federal Programs. Ms. Barrett has served as principal of Haw Creek Elementary since 2013. She replaces Dr. Anita Owenby, who retired in November 2015. Marcia Gudger, a retired elementary school administrator who served at Haw Creek Elementary and Koontz Intermediate School, will serve as interim principal of Haw Creek for the remainder of the school year.

“Ms. Barrett’s leadership experiences as both a Title I teacher and Lead Teacher, along with her roles as a principal, provide her the experience and knowledge she needs for a successful progression into this new role,” said Dr. Baldwin.

Barrett has been an educator for 33 years. She served 12 years as a Title I teacher at Avery’s Creek Elementary, then moved to the role of Title I Lead Teacher for a year and a half before becoming an assistant principal (AP) at Oakley Elementary. After three years as an AP at both Oakley and W.D. Williams, she served as principal of Woodfin Elementary for three years before moving to Haw Creek in 2013.

“This is a terrific opportunity, and I’m very thankful and humbled to be asked to serve the students and teachers of Buncombe County Schools in this role,” said Ms. Barrett. “I look forward to working with schools and leadership to continue providing high quality education to our students.”
