Superintendent's Comments

Dr. Tony Baldwin commented on a variety of topics concerning Buncombe County Schools and its students, faculty, staff, and the communities served by the system. These remarks included:

Snow Make-Up Days Monday’s loss of an attendance day was a good example of the challenge of predicting temperatures, precipitation, and timing of events here in the mountains of Western North Carolina. We have accumulated a total of three days lost due to weather thus far in the school year. These days will be made up in the following manner: Friday, February 23 will become a student attendance day. The early release for staff planning originally set for February 22 will now be observed on February 23. In turn, February the 22 will become a full day of attendance. The two additional days lost will be made up at the end of the year moving the last student attendance day to Tuesday, June 12. Our Communications Department will be announcing these makeup days and revised school calendar via social media as well as on our school and district websites.

Testing Reminders Continuing on with calendar reminders: first semester exams for our high schools will begin January 17 and end on January 23. The optional teacher work day set for January 24 will allow staff to prepare for the transition to second semester which will begin on January 25. Finally, a reminder that we will not be in session this coming Monday, the 15 in recognition of the Martin Luther King holiday.

Class Size Requirements I am encouraged with the reports from Raleigh and the General Assembly acknowledging the significant timing issue related to the state’s decision concerning the K-3 class size mandate set to go into effect next year. We are projecting a $2.5 million cost to implement the additional teachers to meet the requirements. Likewise, I am optimistic that the legislature will provide dollars to support the mandate however the timing of the decision remains a key concern especially in reference to our May 15 deadline for submitting our local budget needs to the commissioners.

Bringing Home Gold Later this month, our Communications Department will be honored in Greensboro by the North Carolina School Public Relations Association with Blue Ribbon Awards in the categories of electronic media, excellence in writing, image graphic design, photography, special events, and publications. Of the seventeen recognitions, 14 are designated as gold awards. Which is the highest level conferred. Stacia Harris, Ben Rickert, and Tim Reaves – we are proud of you guys!
